RE: Maxxair and Rain Sensing Fan-Tastic Fan

If you read the instructions that came with your Fan-Tastic Vent, it says: "Never place a Maxx-Air style cover over, or filter on ceiling fan. Greatly restricted airflow, increased sound levels and electronic component failures will occur." If you don't have the instructions, call their technical support at 1-800-521-0298 and ask them directly. Well I can tell you against the directions from the FF folks I put a large MaxAir cover on our FF and it didn't break anything but I does restrict the air flow and does make it a lot noiser. Had it on there for over a year it is now gone, if anyone wants to buy the cover I'll sell it cheap.

RE: Pulling with gas apliances running

Well after reading all of this I can say you are never to old to learn. I'm still going to use the fridge during travel but I will ensure the appliance is turned off prior to refueling and even before pulling up to the pump islands. I do think some of the folks were a little over the top with their comments to the OP of this thread I don't believe he was telling anyone to do anything they were just saying what they would or wouldn't do themselves.

RE: Can you deduct expenses.....

We work from a office in our 5er some and a home office and then sometimes we go in to the regular office that we do consultant work for. When we travel to a job site and do site seeing also we are allowed to write off the mileage to and from the site and however many nights of camping that are required for our business. If we stay a week but the job only took 2 days we only write off mileage to and from and 2 nights of camping plus meals during business efforts. We used to do Civil War reenacting and were allowed to write off a portion of those expenses as it was considered as volunteer history work.

RE: Pulling with gas apliances running

I'm more concerned with developing an air bubble in the system and burning out the unit due to it not being level. My fix is if I'm traveling NOT IN the mountains I use the gas and keep the fridge cold. If we are traveling IN the mountains I turn off the fridge and use freezer packs to keep things cold until we stop. I never keep the water heater on gas when traveling due to the obvious reasons of danger when refueling, however the fridge doesn't offer this danger since it is a constent flame and does not ignite a burner on and off like the w/h does.

RE: Heartland Big Country v. Jayco Eagle

Can't speak to the Jayco's but I can the Heartland rigs we really love our Big Horn and we looked at the Big Country but liked the few added amenities with the Big Horn. I've been to their factory and seen the rigs being built and I've had a great experience with the service after the sale from our dealer and Heartland itself. I will say I have heard very little negative press on the Jayco's so I would say what you feel fits your needs best is what you should buy.

RE: Went to see our new 5er

I never got to see ours being built but we have toured 2 factories the Heartland last summer and previously we toured the CrossRoads factory when we had a Cruiser. I would recommend this to all if you get in the area, also while in the Elkhart area you should go see the new Museum of RV Industry it is really cool and easy to find they have all kinds of antique RV's to look at we had a great time there.

RE: Thinking of buying a bike?

DW bought me a folding bike at CW for Christmas I like it fine if you are wanting to really do some heavy riding then they probably won't hold up for that. Due to my bad knees and such I need to limit my riding to level ground and around the CG's. I love the folding feature I can store it in the basement storage and DW has a folding tricycle that she carries the dog in with her. I flat refuse to mount anything on the back of our 5er since we had a bad experience with a rack coming off while traveling. We like ours but as it has been said these are light duty bikes not built for rough riding.

RE: We need advise please! We're new at this!

We have a 2008 Big Horn 3055RL and really love it we have had nothing but great support from our Dealer and Heartland when we had some problems (none were major). Very pleased with the fit and finish of the coach we toured the Heartland factory this past summer and was quite iimpressed. We also did the used thing when we started we bought a $4,000 used 1992 Dutchmen 5er found we really loved it and upgraded we went with the Big Horn 3055RL since I needed to be able to have an office where I can work from the road. Pretty cool we get to travel and I'm able to work some to pay for the travel. Good Luck

RE: GA'RVers Winter Rally, Feb 22 & 23, 2008 at Twin Oaks

We were at the first get together back in Dec 05 at FDR and we will be attending this get together. Most of you probably won't remember us since it has been so long, back then we had an old 1992 Dutchmen 24' 5er we made an upgrade to a 2008 Big Horn. Don't know where they will put us I told them we would be with GA RV'rs but the lady didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I made our reservation. Are ya'll still using the RV.Net signs with your user name on them I think I still have the one we used at FDR in 05? Well see ya'll around noon Friday.

RE: How many use their Fiver for a Mobile Office / Residence?

My wife and I design and engineer comercial store fixtures for mostly C-stores for a manufacturer in GA and have to travel some to visit various clients stores. Actually I'm retired and I only assist her now. But we use our Big Horn for living and working from the road it is a great way to do this, we have a home office also but really like being able to travel and continue her work thru the internet and such so we get to see the country and make money to pay for it at the same time.

RE: Forest River,Keystone,Heartland in the winter

I had a problem with one of the lines in our Big Horn freezing in 20 degree temps took it back to the dealer and they found the line was lying against the frame they moved the line and all is well we have been out in the Big Horn and it went down to 12 all worked fine.

RE: B&W Hitches. ????

Ditto, I'm on my 2nd one have been using this hitch for over 5 years and have not had a moments problems. Sold my 04 truck with the hitch in it and kept the companion hitch then had a new hitch installed in my 07 and continued to use the companion hitch. I no longer have a need to pull goose neck trailers since we have retired from the horse business but still love the fact I can have a clean bed so quick and easy.

RE: B&W Turn over and fith wheel

I finely bought a real truck a dodge 3500 duley and it has the B&W hitch already in it. Now here's my question, can I put my Reese fifth wheel in and leave the ball. the truck is a 03 if that makes a difference Can't answer about the Resse hitch but why don't you just purchase the B&W 5th wheel companion hitch and use it? I have this and am on my 2nd truck with this set up and love it. Of course my reason was at the time I towed both 5er and goose neck trailers. But the advantage to the companion hitch is you can lift it out and have a clean bed for hauling other stuff since the entire hitch is bolted in below the bed. Good Luck.

RE: Big Horn vs Everest

Hey, will y'all please get your nomerclature straight here. It confuses me. The part of the cabinet you see when you remove the drawers or doors is called the "face frame" or just "frame." The "stiles" are a part of the door. Panel doors are made up of vertical stiles, horizontal rails, and panels in between them. You're almost correct, the "face frame" is also constructed of "stiles" & "rails" the names only refer to the direction of the piece being used whether it is horizontal or vertical. So, both doors and face frame have stiles & rails. I would say if these folks state they have "solid maple doors" & "solid maple drawer front" that the face frame is probably made of "man made material". I know the Big Horn has solid Oak "face frames", "doors", & "drawer fronts" since we own one and I'm a 4th generation Cabinetmaker! Someone else mentioned Ash in the Big Horn unless they changed this for 09 models ours is an 08 with Oak.

RE: Best Time to Buy & Heartland Sundance Owners

Can't say much about the Sundance but I can speak to Heartland, we have a Big Horn 3055RL and it is great we have had our share of small problems like anyone but our dealer McDonough RV in Georgia and Heartland have been nothing short of great when it comes to service after the sale. They have really stood behind their product and taken very good care of us and our rig. Good Luck and enjoy!

RE: Out of State Purchase

There are a lot of crooks out there who wil take your money and then when you show up either they aren't there any longer or there never was a camper for sale. I have heard of a lot of scams concerning deposits for "sight unseen" units. If possible have more than one lined up to look at and don't do the deposit thing that way if one is sold by the time you get here you'll sitll have a few more to look at. Just my opinion!

RE: Thank goodness this wasn't our site!!

This looks like a CG we stayed one short night in Greensboro, NC it is called Greensboro Campground and the only one in town. When you first pull in it looks fairly good but maybe because we were just staying just for 1 night they put us way in the back in a sight very similar around a bunch of permenant type campers all kinds of junk, old cars and stuff plus our sight was 5" out of level from side to side and all the hook ups were on the wrong side and at the front of the site. YUK don't want to stay there again but I will have to go and call on a client there in Feb maybe I'll ask to stay in their driveway?

RE: Tires rubbing on the shocks

You don't say what brand 5er it is but we had a Crossroads Cruiser 06 model and had the same problem it was the brackets that Lippert had put on brought the shocks out to far and caused them to rub in one case you couldn't even get your finger in between the tire and the shock and when the tire starts flexing you got trouble. CR took the shocks off and shortened the brackets and reinstalled the shocks all was well then. good luck.

RE: big horn

I don't think there is one brand of RV listed on this site that has not had someone complain about either themselves or a friend having had problems with that particular RV. We have had a few problems with our Big Horn but nothing major and certainly nothing more than you would expect from an item that is built on an assembly line. The main thing that is great is we were lucky enough to find a wonderful dealer plus Heartland has given quick and very responsible support to any and all problems. We felt we couldn't find a unit that gave us as much "bag for our buck" and the floor plan fits our needs 100%. You didn't list any of the problems nor did you state if they were taken care of and how major a problem they are if at all. Frankly I don't believe there is an RV mfg. that doesn't have problems as I said these units are built on a assembly line and you're going to have things missed. To me the main thing that speaks for a particular RV mfg. is how well they deal with your problems and quickly they respond and for that matter I can say Heartland has fulfilled our needs greatly.

RE: New to fiver, bedroom heat question

On our old 5er I replaced the registers with adjustable ones I found at Lowes closed off the ones to the rear and it helped to get more heat to the bedroom. However, one problem was the location of the furnace it was way to the back of the camper which meant the heated air had to travel a long way to get to the bedroom. On our current 5er the furnace is more centrally located and we get plenty heat in the bedroom but I still replaced the registers with the ones that adjust and can be closed if needed.
